
DeWitt began her stage career at 13 years old. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Then, when she was performing in summer show and was urged by the director to enroll in UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she worked as a secretary until her debut on television in an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was trained by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has said that the two never did meet. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 period is among her most famous. She was part of the pilot for the show and employed. She also portrayed Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff series , The Ropers. DeWitt was the last actor to appear in the show's 1984 finale. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she stopped acting for a long time. She made her return on stage in June of 1991 when she appeared on an Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an character based on her voiced by another actress in 1997. She appeared on an episode of Cybill and made an appearance on the final episode of Living Single. Her work in the 2000s include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
